Monday May 31, 2007 - East Cape Baja

Had an awesome time fishing the East Cape of Baja from Friday May 25 - Tuesday May 29, 2007. What an epic trip!!! Took off from San Diego early Friday and jumped in a van to Playa del Sol on the East Cape. Accomodations were awesome!! One night we even scored a seafood buffett stacked with fresh shrimp, lobster salad, scallops, and yes..... abalone!!!

Ran out about 40NM North East to try and find some porpoise schools. Scored one dorado on the troll and a striped marlin. Supposed to come back in @ 3, but our capitan wanted to catch fish. So we headed back to the tuna bite inshore and scored 2 40lb tuna and a 60lber!! Got back in @ 4:30 and had an awesome meal.

Fished a different boat and stayed inshore most of the time. Must have counted 20-30 striped marlin finning and jumping throughout the day. Flying fish and birds everywhere. Pretty amazing show of life. Even saw a fairly large manta ray. Scored 4 striped marlin, including a double hookup! Both marlin landed and successfully released. I've never seen marlin jump as much as these marlin did. Pretty amazing stuff.

Went back to our Capitan on Friday and decided to gamble on our last day of fishing. We headed back out to the 40NM spot we visited on Friday in search of porpoise and boy did we find them. While everyone else was inshore fishing stripers, for an hour or so we were the only boat out there. White bellied dolphins cruised the surface as tuna boils popped up left and right! From 9:00 - 11:30 we had a consistent Tuna bite that landed us 13 tuna. 7 in the 40-50lb range and 6 in the 10-20lb range. We even scored a striped marlin in the mix!!!

When the fishing is hot in PV, it's hot. But I have been to the east cape a few times and have always had the best fishing. The place is just teaming with life. I had fun catching big Tuna in PV, but consistently battling 40-60 lb tuna without a harness beats PV hands down.

Overall a great time. The tuna were awesome on light tackle and put up a great fight. All stripers leadered and released successfully. I was surprised at how many people decided to bring back their marlin. 3 or 4 a day were brought in to our dock. Here's some pics:
